A parent handbook (sometimes called a family handbook or enrollment packet) is a document that licensed childcare programs must provide to every enrolled family. All 50 states require licensed programs to have one. Required contents vary by state but almost always include: hours of operation, tuition and payment terms, illness exclusion policy, medication administration policy, emergency procedures, discipline policy, arrival and departure procedures, and contact information for the licensing agency. The handbook is reviewed during licensing inspections — missing sections or policies that do not match actual practice are common inspection findings.
