All 50 states require licensed childcare programs that care for infants to follow safe sleep practices. The requirements are based on the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines: infants must be placed on their backs to sleep, on a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet, in an approved crib or bassinet with no soft bedding, bumpers, pillows, or positioners. Swaddling restrictions and policies on what to do when an infant rolls over are common additions. Programs must maintain one approved sleep surface per infant. Staff must be trained in safe sleep before working with infants, and programs must have a written safe sleep policy. Parents who want their child placed in a non-standard position must provide a signed, dated healthcare-provider note.
