The staff-to-child ratio (also called teacher-to-child ratio) is the core quantitative requirement in childcare licensing: for every one adult, there is a maximum number of children that adult can be responsible for at once. Ratios are always age-specific because younger children require closer supervision. A typical set of ratios for a center might be 1:4 for infants, 1:6 for toddlers, 1:10 for preschoolers, and 1:15 for school-age children. The exact ratios vary considerably by state, and even within a state the ratio can vary by setting (center vs. family home) or by age cut-off. Exceeding ratios — even briefly — is one of the most commonly cited inspection violations. See /data/ratios-by-state for the ratio and group-size rules in every state.
